The Story Behind Ritual: From a Dream in Sardinia to a Jewelry Brand with Purpose
Every brand has a beginning. For Ritual, it began with an unforgettable night in Sardinia, Italy and a dream that stayed with Christina Kerndal for years.
At just 18 years old, Christina was a Danish student traveling through Italy, discovering the art, architecture, history, and vibrant cultures that would ultimately influence her life as a designer and entrepreneur.
While visiting Sardinia, she discovered Ritual Club, an extraordinary nightclub built into the rocks and caves of the island. Created by architect Andres Fiore, the space seemed to emerge naturally from the Sardinian landscape, surrounded by granite, olive trees and myrtle. It was unlike anything Christina had ever experienced.
One evening, while dancing at Ritual Club, she had a surprisingly clear thought:
“One day, I will open a company called Ritual.”
She even kept a postcard from the club—a small reminder of an idea that would eventually become much more.
From Inspiration to Reality
That dream became a reality in 2003, when Christina founded Ritual in Antigua,
Guatemala.
The original Ritual was very different from the jewelry company our clients know today. The business specialized in hand-carved furnishings, antique Indian and Balinese columns and doors, and distinctive works of art collected and inspired by Christina's travels.
But even then, the philosophy behind Ritual was taking shape: an appreciation for handcrafted artistry, traditional techniques, beautiful materials and objects with a story to tell.
Then, in 2014, Christina brought that philosophy into a new chapter with the launch of Ritual Jewellery in Santa Barbara, California.
A New Chapter, the Same Ritual Spirit
The products may have changed over the years, but the heart of Ritual has remained remarkably consistent.
Today, Ritual creates beautifully handcrafted sterling silver, brass and copper jewelry, designed in Santa Barbara and handmade in India by skilled artisan silversmiths.
Rather than following disposable trends, Ritual celebrates the beauty and individuality that come from jewelry made by hand. The collection is designed to be mixed, layered and worn in personal ways, allowing each person to make Ritual their own.
That connection to artisanship also extends beyond jewelry. Ritual has built long-lasting relationships with the people and communities behind its work and continues to support causes that reflect the company's values.
More Than 20 Years Later...
What began as an idea in the mind of an adventurous 18-year-old traveler has grown into
a brand shaped by decades of travel, creativity, craftsmanship and human connection.
And Christina still has that original postcard from Ritual Club.
It is a reminder that sometimes inspiration arrives when we least expect it and that one seemingly small moment can influence the course of an entire life.
From Sardinia to Guatemala, Santa Barbara to India, the Ritual story continues.
And just like every handcrafted piece of Ritual jewelry, it began with a story worth telling.
